Thailand: The Fascinating Underwater World of Koh Rok

Our handsome speedboat was anchored in the middle of Andaman Sea as people started to dive with their snorkeling gear. The clear water sparkled as sunrays touched its surface. I jumped into the sea and was transported into a happy place, my comfort zone. I was too ecstatic that one hour seemed fleeting. Our snorkeling tour in Koh Rok was surprisingly one of the best sites in Thailand.

We’re halfway on our Beach Hop Asia 2016, me and my buddy’s two-month summer backpacking trip, and we’re exploring the southern part of Thailand. After our Full Moon Party stint at the infamous island of Koh Pangan and our island hopping adventures at Ao Nang in Krabi, we headed to Koh Lanta for a relaxed four-day stop.

The laidback island of Koh Lanta paved way to a much needed retreat from the maddening crowd of other islands (koh) on this part of Thailand. In those four days of some quiet time, we dedicated a day for a sea excursion on the neighboring islands of Koh Rok Nai and Koh Rok Nok.

We booked at Rainbow Lanta Travel and Tour through their website and they confirmed through email. On the day of the trip, we were collected from our home in Koh Lanta, Soontreeya Lanta Resort, right after breakfast and were brought to the docking area right by the Long Beach.

Our gorgeous speedboat was filled with travelers who were beach-ready. It took us an hour before we reached our first stop, a snorkeling site off the coast of Koh Rok.

After our boat was anchored, everyone started to jump into the clear water and explored the underwater scene. And it was so great. The rich coral gardens and countless marine species were amazing. It was so beautiful that everywhere I fixed my eyes on, I always get the same result, amazement.

After an hour, we settled at Koh Rok Nok and waited for the Rainbow Lanta Travel and Tour team to arrange our picnic lunch which is included in the package. We looked for our spot and laid our sarong on the sand as we watch some of the guests plunged into the, again, clear water. The cerulean sky blended well with the turquoise water. The powdery white sand was so fine that our feet was effortlessly buried into it.

We were called for lunch and the buffet picnic spread included fried chicken, stir-fried veggies and chicken curry dish. Fresh fruits and cold drinks were also provided. We got really tired from the snorkeling trip that we immediately rallied towards the picnic table.

We spent a good two hours on the island and just wasted it lazing around. The only thing that's missing was a cold Chang beer as it was the perfect set-up for an afternoon drinking sesh, we should’ve brought one.

Koh Rok Nok

We were herded back to our boat after some hours of lounging on the beach. I was thinking that we were heading back to Koh Lanta (and finally will be getting some cold beer) when we halted somewhere in the middle of the sea. We were then told that there will be another round of snorkeling, I immediately grabbed my gear and explored the, yet again, happy underwater world of Koh Rok.
