My buddy stood in shadow under the awning of our balcony at Holiday Inn Resort in Krabi, Thailand. I was preparing coffee while he was busy watching the golden sunset reflecting its light towards Ao Nang Beach. As the sun dips lower, he quietly lounged on the sunbed as I walked towards him and seated on the other one. I noticed some guests four floors below who were enjoying their afternoon dip at the pool. Wrapping my cup of coffee on both hands, I gently sipped on it as I witnessed the sky turned reddish orange to purple. That perfect moment of stillness was priceless.
Krabi was our second stop on the Thailand leg of our Beach Hop Asia 2016 summer backpacking trip. Me and my buddy were joined by six of our dearest friends and had a blast on the party island of Koh Pangan at the infamous Full Moon Party. After enduring long hours of ferry and bus rides, we arrived in Krabi around afternoon and settled on our home for three days, Holiday Inn Resort Krabi.
The
resort’s lobby had this contemporary-tropical feel to it as they utilized wood,
glass, steel and stones (yes, stones as wall design) for the whole space. The
wooden furniture were pumped up with orange and green plush pillows and cushions.
The high ceiling provided an airy feel with a nice view of the pool and lush
greeneries around.
We
booked on different accommodation types so as to explore more of Holiday Inn
Resort Krabi. Some went to a Premier Room while some got lucky and had a
private access to the pool directly from their room.
Billeted
on a Deluxe Room (check room types and rates), me and my buddy were on the
topmost floor of what seemed to be a villa which provided a penthouse-feel as
we got to have a great view of almost everything.
The
room was enormous with high-ceiling and traditional Thai roofing. Earth tones
dominated the whole space. The unfinished
effect on the concrete walls and flooring complemented the warm feel from the
wood.
Deluxe Room on the topmost floor (feels like a penthouse suite) |
On
the far end of the desk was the queen-sized bed that rested on a wooden
bedstead. Its clean white linens and fluffy pillows were such a refreshing
sight.
I
walked further and noticed a door leading to the bathroom. It was huge and
echoed the whole theme of wood and concrete which added to its industrial feel, in a very classy way. The
unfinished concrete walls and flooring were complemented by the wooden
furnishings from the vanity mirror. Bathroom amenities on wooden trays were
also provided.
I
also spotted a separate stall for the hot and cold shower and opposite it was a
fitted bathtub with a great view from the glass window beside it. I instantly
felt the need to have a long warm bubble bath the moment I saw it.
I went back to the main room and pushed aside the heavy drapes that almost encircled the room. I shrieked as I opened the glass doors. It revealed a corner balcony with two wooden sunbeds facing the pool. I turned to the other side of the balcony and saw a coffee table and chairs. There was also a wooden door leading to the other side of the room.
I
loved how we had the perfect balcony for sunset-watching, tanning and coffee
breaks. It instantly became my favorite spot.
It
took us the whole afternoon to rest and recuperate. I hid under the lustrous
sheets and let the long curtains apart so as to open up the whole space. It was
almost sundown when I got up and witnessed a great purplish sunset right
outside our private balcony.
The
early morning sun glowed in our room as I woke up, I then recalled leaving the
drapes open. I immediately got up, prepared my morning coffee and sat on the
sunbed. I closed my eyes and let the sun kissed my skin while hearing the sweet
chirping of the birds; it was too perfect.
The
group converged on InnAsia Restaurant, the in-house restaurant of the resort,
where the breakfast buffet was served. We feasted on traditional and
international brekkie favorites. After spending three weeks in Malaysia before
heading to Thailand, I was craving for pork bacons. So imagine my excitement as
I fill my plate with pancakes, egg and bacons!
Relaxing
is an understatement as to how I describe our three-day affair at Holiday Inn Resort
Krabi. The simplest joys in life can be found on simplest places, like
balconies with a fantastic sunset view, really.
